Silt

Silt is granular material of a size somewhere between sand and clay, whose mineral origin is quartz and feldspar. Silt may occur as a soil or as sediment mixed in suspension with water (also known as a suspended load) in a body of water such as a river. It may also exist as soil deposited at the bottom of a water body. Silt has a moderate specific area with a typically non-sticky, plastic feel. Silt usually has a floury feel when dry, and a slippery feel when wet. Silt can be visually observed with a hand lens.

Sources:-

Silt is created by a variety of physical processes capable of splitting the generally sand-sized quartz crystals of primary rocks by exploiting deficiencies in their lattice. These involve chemical weathering of rock and regolith, and a number of physical weathering processes such as frost shattering and haloclasty. The main process is abrasion through transport, including fluvial comminution, aeolian attrition and glacial grinding. It is in semi-arid environments that substantial quantities of silt are produced. Silt is sometimes known as "rock flour" or "stone dust", especially when produced by glacial action. Mineralogically, silt is composed mainly of quartz and feldspar. Sedimentary rock composed mainly of silt is known as siltstone. Liquifaction created by a strong earthquake is silt suspended in water that is hydrodynamically forced up from below ground level.

Grain size criteria:-

In the Udden–Wentworth scale (due to Krumbein), silt particles range between 0.0039 and 0.0625 mm, larger than clay but smaller than sand particles. ISO 14688 grades silts between 0.002 mm and 0.063 mm. In actuality, silt is chemically distinct from clay, and unlike clay, grains of silt are approximately the same size in all dimensions; furthermore, their size ranges overlap. Clays are formed from thin plate-shaped particles held together by electrostatic forces, so present a cohesion. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture Soil Texture Classification system, the sand-silt distinction is made at the 0.05 mm particle size. The USDA system has been adopted by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). In the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS) and the AASHTO Soil Classification system, the sand-silt distinction is made at the 0.075 mm particle size (i.e., material passing the #200 sieve). Silts and clays are distinguished mechanically by their plasticity.

Environmental impacts:-

Silt is easily transported in water or other liquid and is fine enough to be carried long distances by air in the form of dust. Thick deposits of silty material resulting from deposition by aeolian processes are often called loess. Silt and clay contribute to turbidity in water. Silt is transported by streams or by water currents in the ocean. When silt appears as a pollutant in water the phenomenon is known as siltation.

Silt, deposited by annual floods along the Nile River, created the rich, fertile soil that sustained the Ancient Egyptian civilization. Silt deposited by the Mississippi River throughout the 20th century has decreased due to a system of levees, contributing to the disappearance of protective wetlands and barrier islands in the delta region surrounding New Orleans.

In south east Bangladesh, in the Noakhali district, cross dams were built in the 1960s whereby silt gradually started forming new land called "chars". The district of Noakhali has gained more than 28 sqmi of land in the past 50 years.

With Dutch funding, the Bangladeshi government began to help develop older chars in the late 1970s, and the effort has since become a multi-agency operation building roads, culverts, embankments, cyclone shelters, toilets and ponds, as well as distributing land to settlers. By fall 2010, the program will have allotted some to 21,000 families.

A main source of silt in urban rivers is disturbance of soil by construction activity.
A main source in rural rivers is erosion from plowing of farm fields, clearcutting or slash and burn treatment of forests.

Culture:-

The fertile black silt of the Nile river's banks is a symbol of rebirth, associated with the Egyptian god Anubis.

The average temperature of the planets

Within the Solar System, the average temperature on: • Pluto is around -235°C, • Neptune around -220°C, • Uranus -210°C, • Saturn -184°C, • Jupiter -153°C. • The temperature on Mars varies between about -87°C and -5°C, with an average of around -46°C. • The lowest natural temperature on Earth (recorded at Vostok, Antarctica in 1983) is -89°C; the highest surface temperature on Earth (recorded at Al 'Aziziyah, Libya in 1922) is 58°C; the mean overall temperature on Earth is 14°C. Planet Biography. Planets Surface Temperatures. Why temperatures differs from planets to planets? In general, the surface temperature decreases as the distance from the sun increases. Venus is an exception because its dense atmosphere acts as a greenhouse and heats the surface above the lead's melting point of 880 ° F (471 ° C).

5 Trapezius Exercises Without Weights or any tool

Wanna traps (or trapezius) like Goldberg?     Powerful, bulging traps are eye-catchers that give a real powerful look to your physique. I am, of course, talking about the trapezius muscles, which extends along part of the neck and down the shoulder blades, whose function is to support the arms, move the shoulder blades… and make you look superhuman. Trapezius is an important muscle group which aids in supporting the spine and neck muscles. The trapezius consists of three regions and bodybuilders work on their traps more frequently than any other muscle in upper body. By building traps, one can  increase the upper body strength  which is extremely required for weight lifting. In-addition to that, you will grab more attention from other people. Since it’s not always possible to train with weights, there are a couple of exercises that can really help to build traps just by using your own body-weight. But it’s important to do these exercises ...

The Difference Between Being Intelligent And Being Wise

Intelligent : •   wise, cunning, capable of thinking and reason Wisdom: • The state of being wise • Ability to use knowledge and / or experience wisely • Able to determine what is wise against what is unwise • A saying, a philosophy or other advice considered wise In Short:  An intelligent man has a whole sea of knowledge and knows every fact. On the other hand, a wise man does not have all the knowledge that an intelligent man has, but he has the brain to know when to use knowledge. I have seen a lot of smart people make really stupid decisions. I was one of those people! The information I had before and after these decisions has not changed. But with every wrong decision, if I was willing to learn, my level of wisdom changed. The main difference is that: A smart or intelligent person knows how to solve any problem. A wise person knows how to avoid this problem. Knowledge makes a person intelligent. Experience makes a person wise.

10 Things That Nobody Will Tell You About Life

• If you are unemployed for a long time, no one will give you value or courage, not even your loved ones. Do not fall in love with them. • Sometimes you have to ignore people, break the law and follow a different path...

Electric Flux

Electric field can be quantitatively described by using the concept of electric flux. Electric flux is the number of electric field lines penetrating a surface or passing through a surface. The electric field can be uniform or non-uniform. Let us now try to find the electric flux passing through a surface when the field is uniform.

How To Become A Topper
