DISTANCES BETWEEN PLANETS

SOMETIMES THE DISTANCES WILL BE CLOSER AND OTHER TIMES THEY WILL BE FARTHER AWAY. Credit: Google The reason for this is that the planets have elliptical orbits and none of them are perfect circles. As an example, the distance between the planet Mercury and the Earth can vary from 77 million kilometers at the nearest point, to 222 million kilometers at the furthest point. There are a lot of differences in the distances between the planets depending on their position in their orbital path. The following table shows the eight planets and the average distance between them. The AU column is the distance in astronomical units. 1 AU is the distance from the Sun to Earth, which is 149,600,000 km . PLANET DISTANCE TABLE FROM TO AU KM MILES Mercury Venus 0.34 50,290,000 31,248,757 Mercury Earth 0.61 91,691,000 56,974,146 Mercury Mars 1.14 170,030,000 105,651,744 Mercury Jupiter 4.82 720,420,000 447,648,234 Mercury Saturn 9.14 1,36...

NEPTUNE FACTS

Planet: Neptune NEPTUNE IS THE EIGHTH PLANET OF THE SUN AND THE LAST OF THE KNOWN PLANETS. WHILE IT IS THE THIRD LARGEST PLANET WITH REGARD TO THE MASS, IT IS ONLY THE LARGEST FOUR IN DIAMETER TERMS. DUE TO HIS BLUE COLOR, NEPTUNE WAS APPOINTED AFTER THE ROMAN GOD OF THE SEA. FACTS ABOUT NEPTUNE • Neptune needs 164.8 Earth years to orbit the Sun. On July 11, 2011, Neptune completed its first full orbit since its discovery in 1846. • Neptune was discovered by Jean Joseph Le Verrier. The planet was not known by ancient civilizations because it is not visible to the naked eye. The planet was initially called Le Verrier after its discoverer. This name, however, was quickly abandoned and the name of Neptune was chosen instead. • Neptune is the Roman god of the sea. In Greek, Neptune is called Poseidon. • Neptune has the second largest gravity of any planet in the solar system, second only to Jupiter. • The trajectory of the orbit of Neptune i...

Uranus Facts

Uranus is the seventh planet from the Sun. It is not visible to the naked eye, and it became the first planet discovered with the use of a telescope. Uranus turns sideways with an axial inclination of 98 degrees. It is often described as "rolling around the Sun sideways." Planet: Uranus.  Uranus Planet Profile Equatorial Diameter: 51,118 km Polar Diameter: 49,946 km Mass: 8.68 × 10^25 kg (15 Earths) Moons: 27 (Miranda , Titania , Ariel, Umbriel & Oberon) Rings: 13 Orbit Distance: 2,870,658,186 km (19.19 AU) Orbit Period: 30,687 days (84.0 years) Effective Temperature: -216 °C Discovery Date: March 13th 1781 Discovered By: William Herschel Here Are Some Incredible Scientific Facts About Uranus • Uranus was officially discovered by Sir William Herschel in 1781. It is too dim to have been seen by the ancients. At first, Herschel thought it was a comet, but several years later it was confirmed as a planet. Hers...
